Steven Thompson couldn’t believe the sitter that Cyriel Dessers missed for Rangers in the 4-1 win against Nice on Thursday night.
Philippe Clement sent a statement to all his Gers critics with a resounding victory in the Europa League as Vaclav Cerny, Mohammed Diomande and a Hamza Igamane brace settled the affair.
However, Dessers replaced Igamane for the final 20 minutes at the Allianz Riviera and he left former Rangers forward Thompson dumbfounded live on BBC Sportsound [28 November, 9:53pm] as the Nigerian missed a golden opportunity to get on the scoresheet.
He said: “You can only laugh. Dessers should have headed it but once he takes the touch on his chest… I think he’s only five yards out with whole goal at his mercy. Oh dear.”
Cyriel Dessers could now lose his place at Rangers
Many Rangers supporters will have been scratching their heads as Clement opted to leave Dessers out of the starting lineup for Igamane in what proved to be a masterstroke from the Belgian.
The 22-year-old had his own point to prove in only his third start for the Gers since his arrival from AS FAR in the summer – he has been dubbed “Moroccan mince” for failing to adapt immediately to life in Scotland.
However, his critics will be cowering away after a statement performance in the Europa League against top-quality Ligue 1 opposition no less; he single-handedly gifted Clement the result he needed to ease the ongoing pressure on his tenure with two goals and one assist against Nice.
Dessers now finds himself in an unfamiliar situation at Ibrox, with a worthy competitor to lead the line – it appears his long line of lacklustre displays for the Light Blues will no longer go unpunished.
Furthermore, the competition in Glasgow is expected to become more intense in the coming months, with Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt emerging as a top transfer target with a January loan move mooted [Yorkshire Evening Post].
The Nigerian has produced back-to-back howlers in the Europa League for Rangers as his true level is laid bare for all to see – he is not the forward to take this side to the next level, and never truly has been the forward to take this side to the next level.
The sooner he is moved on, the happier everyone will be.
