Paul Lambert has dubbed Rangers an “absolute mess” after talking about Celtic losing 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The Gers haven’t had the best of starts to the 2024/25 season and find themselves third in the Scottish Premiership.

However, after Celtic lost in the Champions League, Lambert was asked about why Scottish teams can’t compete against the big European teams.

Despite it being mainly about Celtic, Lambert couldn’t help but mention Rangers while speaking on talkSPORT (2 October, 08:29 am).

“Rangers are in an absolute mess at the minute so they can’t compete [financially],” he said.

Rangers take on Lyon in Europa League

While Rangers may find themselves in a bit of a situation at the moment thanks to the sudden resignation of John Bennett [The Athletic, 14 September], on the pitch, they’ve managed to turn things around.

The Ibrox outfit are on a four-game winning streak after they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat during the first Old Firm derby of the season.

Their 2-0 win against Malmo in Sweden last week is undoubtedly the best they have played all season, and that can be taken into this next European outing at Ibrox.

There have been plenty of changes at Ibrox since the end of last season and although Philippe Clement’s future has been questioned, he seems to be safe for now, especially since interim chairman John Gilligan backed him publically on Sky Sports (24 September).

Should the Gers manage to triumph over the Ligue 1 side on Thursday 3 October, it would be a real statement of intent from the club and would no doubt show they can still challenge on all fronts for silverware.

In other Rangers news, Cyriel Dessers has shared his verdict on the Europa League tie v Lyon.
