'Absolute No-Brainer' - Heart & Hand delighted as Rangers confirm another 'Quality' signing

Connor Barron was an “absolute no-brainer” of a signing for Rangers to make this summer, according to Heart & Hand Podcast.

Host David Edgar reacted via Twitter on 20 June after the club confirmed a deal the same day to bring in the former Aberdeen midfielder after he left Pittodrie at the end of his contract.

The 21-year-old joins a Light Blues midfield that has already lost John Lundstram and Ryan Jack at the expiry of their own deals, so Philippe Clement needs replacements.

Edgar wrote: “Barron is an absolute no-brainer signing. Quality young Scot available for very little. Glad we did deal.”

The Gers hierarchy needed to start restocking the midfield and in Barron they have landed a proven Scottish Premiership operator who they believe will continue to improve.

How much he will actually cost will likely now depend on a tribunal ruling unless the club can agree a fee with the Dons [Scottish Sun, 12 June], but it is sure to be less than a similar player would cost who wasn’t out of contract.

Added to Clinton Nsiala’s arrival on a free from AC Milan and the expected return to Ibrox of Liam Kelly on the same basis [Sky Sports, 18 June] after his departure from Motherwell the Light Blues are managing to do a decent amount of their business in a cost-effective way so far.

It is just as well when they have agreed to pay a hefty fee for Oscar Cortes to stay, with £4million reported by the Daily Record on 1 June as what the deal would have to cost, with another £2m plus add-ons spent on Jefte [Daily Record print edition, 25 May, page 58].

Connor Barron’s arrival at Ibrox has gone down well.

It is likely to cost a fair few more millions to sufficiently restock the squad this summer, and John Bennett has assured the manager that money will be made available [Daily Record, 14 June].

But it will certainly make that easier for other targets to bring in a potential new starter in central midfield for what should be relatively small compensation.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist has issued a new Lawrence Shankland to Ibrox verdict.
