Rangers have received a devastating financial blow after being knocked out of the Champions League with arch-rivals Celtic set to benefit.
That is according to ex-Ibrox defender Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the immediate aftermath of the Glasgow giants’ traumatic Wednesday night defeat to Dynamo Kyiv.
The Glasgow club’s 2-0 defeat to Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier means they will fall into the Europa League.
Brazilian winger Jefte’s harsh red card changed the game with ten-man Rangers helpless to resist a dominant Dynamo performance.
Rangers set to miss out on serious money after loss
Celtic go into the revamped competition looking to take their slice of the £733m prize pot with over £17 million guaranteed to be on its way to Celtic Park before a ball has even been kicked.
Rangers’ early exit will gift their rivals even more cash with the Hoops set to take home all of the UK pool figure that will be distributed to Scottish clubs in Europe’s elite competition.
“It’s a difficult one to take”, Hutton told Football Insider.
“The big thing was to try and make Champions League football, that’s where the manager, the club want to be and the players want to test themselves at the highest level.
“Of course financially it would have made a huge difference in terms of who they could get in before the end of the transfer window.
“It’s definitely not ideal but they do drop down into the Europa so they’ve still got European football.
“You want to be in the Champions League, we know Celtic are there already and with the money that’s coming in, the gap just seems to be getting bigger.”
