Medical Done: Club agree deal to sign Aston Villa teen - Sources

Aston Villa left-back Lino Sousa has agreed a loan move to Bristol Rovers, sources have told Football Insider.

The highly-rated 19-year-old had a medical at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday and is set to finalise his move today.

Sousa had a spell on loan at Plymouth Argyle last season and made eight appearances in the Championship.

The former West Brom academy graduate previously played for Arsenal before moving to Villa, but he has failed to break into the first team of either club.

Sousa thrived in Arsenal’s Under-23s team where he played 37 games and scored five goals, which led to Villa making the move for him in February of this year.

He joined Unai Emery’s side for an undisclosed fee and is now set for his second loan spell to gain more first-team opportunities.

The loan move to Bristol Rovers is seen as a positive for all parties involved as Sousa aims to continue his personal development.

Only four teams conceded more goals in League One last season, therefore bolstering Matt Taylor’s defensive options was important for Bristol Rovers.

The Pirates kickstarted the 2024-25 campaign with a 1-0 win against Northampton Town.

Despite Villa allowing Sousa to leave, the club are actively looking to sign new defenders this summer.

Football Insider revealed that Diego Carlos and Liverpool’s Joe Gomez are two targets for Emery.
