Philippe Clement losing his job as Rangers manager is a realistic possibility despite the “strange” reveal that he hasn’t spoken to the club’s board, says Derek Ferguson.
Following the damaging 2-1 defeat at Pittodrie on 30 October which left the Light Blues trailing Aberdeen, and Celtic, by nine points the Ibrox boss said there had been no discussions over his future with the Gers hierarchy [Daily Record, 1 November].
Ferguson is baffled by that fact when the Belgian is so obviously underperforming, and feels that in any line of work it would be expected for those in charge to communicate a need to improve.
Clement has been beaten three times in the Scottish Premiership already this term, while failing to qualify for the Champions League group stage, but has exacerbated frustrations amongst the fanbase with his assessments of the progress his side are making.
The 50-year-old was heavily criticised in the wake of a 3-0 thrashing by Celtic on 1 September, after talking up the 6-0 victory over Ross County a week earlier, and Ferguson says his “bizarre” claim that the Dons defeat was one of Rangers’ better performances is not what supporters want to hear.
And despite questions over whether the club can afford to make another managerial change the ex-Ibrox midfielder is convinced it is possible.
Rangers defeat at Aberdeen opened nine-point gap to Celtic, Dons
He exclusively told Ibrox News: “Of course [it’s realistic that he goes]. It cannot go on. He’s got to answer to somebody, there’s board members there.
“And what he said in the media that he hadn’t spoke to them, I think that was after the Aberdeen game.
“Two or three days after an extremely poor result [it was] bizarre that he came out and said it was one of the better performances, strange thing to say when you lose to one of your biggest rivals, I don’t think that’s what fans want to hear.
“But it was strange that he hadn’t spoken to anybody, because anybody in a job if you’re not performing people are going to sit down with you, whether it’s in our case, we’ve not got the chairman, we’ve not go the CEO, there’s board members, they should be having a conversation with him.
“Just to let him know that it’s clearly not good enough and you need to up the stakes, it needs to be better.”
