Keith Jackson believes Philippe Clement has been trying to protect himself with the “scattered” decisions he has made, including bringing Ianis Hagi back into the fold at Rangers.
The Gers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and are nine points adrift of rivals Celtic and Aberdeen.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (11 November), Jackson shared his thoughts on Clement’s treatment of the Romania international, who was originally outcast before being brought back into contention when a contract issue was resolved.
“I don’t know if he’s trying to protect his squad or if he’s trying to protect himself and his reputation,” he said.
“Some of the thinking behind everything is so scattered, ‘Hagi – don’t want him will never be a Rangers player [compared to now] Hagi – come back in, we’re desperate for you’.
“Then he’s got him sitting on the bench and he’s got Kieran Dowell on in front of him, his decisions, he’s hanging himself with his decisions”.
Philippe Clement needs to get things under control at Rangers
The Gers have shown glimpses of what they are capable of this term but have been far too inconsistent and have particularly crumbled in pressure games this term.
Their games against both Aberdeen and Celtic are just two examples of this and are the main reason why they are nine points adrift of first and second place.
While Rangers’ recent form has been decent with the club currently unbeaten in their last three games across all competitions, fans still need a lot more from their team.
No matter what changes are made to the squad, even if Hagi were to come in, it feels like nothing is working and the Ibrox outfit seems to be just going back to square one by patching up a bad performance with two or three mediocre wins.
Things can’t continue on like this and unless their form can be turned around, it could be the beginning of the end for the Belgian’s stint in Scotland.
