Bryan King believes Tottenham would be “foolish” not to offer Son Heung-min a brand-new contract at the club.
The ex-Spurs scout claims the 32-year-old has been one of the North London side’s “outstanding” players in recent years.
As previously reported by the Telegraph (4 November), Tottenham plan to trigger a one-year option in Son’s contract which would keep him at the club until June 2026. It had been speculated that Spurs might offer the South Korean a fresh two-year deal.
However, according to TBR Football (8 November), this is not the case, which has left Son’s camp unhappy with Tottenham. As a result, the Saudi Pro League have taken notice, with Son emerging as a transfer target for next summer.
And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks it is important Spurs keep hold of Son.
“Son has been one of Spurs’ outstanding players in recent times, alongside Harry Kane,” King said.
“If the club don’t think he is worth a two-year contract, I think the board need to take a hard look at themselves. Tottenham would be foolish if they gave Son the chance to leave the club and join the Saudi Pro League.
“Even just having him at the club. He is a great help for younger players behind the scenes. He is a beacon to younger players, to see how important hard work and enthusiasm is.”
Son Heung-min to leave Tottenham in 2025?
Extending Son’s contract by another year would see him tied to the club until 2026. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean Son will remain in North London beyond next summer.
If the Saudi Pro League make an enticing offer, and Son pushes for an exit, he could leave Spurs next year.
Of course, extending his contract at least means that Spurs would be able to secure a fee for the forward, rather than watch him walk away for free.
However, losing him at all could prove costly to Ange Postecoglou and the club.
Therefore, with Son’s camp reportedly unhappy, Spurs might want to reconsider their position on the South Korea international’s long-term future.
