Keith Jackson has shared that Derek McInnes was “desperate” to accept the Rangers job in 2017 but chose against accepting it because of then chairman Dave King.
The Kilmarnock manager has been linked with taking over at Rangers should Philippe Clement be sacked with Jackson being one of his biggest backers.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (11 November), Jackson shared how King swayed the 53-year-old’s decision back in 2017.
“He turned Dave King down, when he decided not to take the job when it was offered to him, purely because Dave King attempted to shift the goalposts on him and the negotiations in the 11th hour.
“The truth is Derek McInnes that week has picked the Rangers starting XI when they were at home to Ross County at the weekend.
“That’s how far down the road he was mentally, he was desperate to take the job and he didn’t take it after having met with Dave King that he couldn’t trust him and didn’t have the faith in him”.
Could Derek McInnes be an ideal match for Rangers?
McInnes has already managed to get one up over the Gers this season as Kilmarnock beat Clement’s men 1-0 in the Scottish Premiership at Rugby Park on 20 October.
While this game obviously shouldn’t define whether the Scotsman gets the job, it feels like it’s quite telling when things such as the gulf in money and quality between the two teams are taken into account.
A plethora of names have been thrown around regarding the managerial hot seat at Ibrox but for most fans, the 53-year-old is likely high on their lists of candidates.
He’s managed to outdo expectations with a shoestring budget which is a feat in itself but imagine if he was afforded the opportunity to have a go with a larger budget and with a team of the Gers’ quality, it feels like it could be a match made in heaven.
Of course, Clement is still in his job but if things don’t improve soon, the Scotsman could have John Gilligan calling him up sooner than many may think.
In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson believes Philippe Clement has lost the faith of both the Gers’ players and fans.
