'Major' - Journalists react as star dropped for Rangers with Clement unhappy with him

Cyriel Dessers has been dropped to the bench as part of some “major” Rangers team news after leaving his manager unhappy in midweek, according to Roger Hannah and Robert Grieve.

The two Scottish Sun journalists reacted via X to the Gers line-up to face St Mirren on 27 October, as the usual starting striker was left out of the XI following his odd exit from the 4-0 win over FCSB on Thursday 24 October.

Dessers, 29, walked off in the Europa League and went straight down the tunnel complaining of being poked in the eye, forcing Clement to unexpectedly bring Hamza Igamane on, with the Moroccan scoring his first for the club, and both Grieve and Hannah believe the manager wasn’t happy about it.

Grieve said: “Dessers walked off the pitch, complained of an eye issue there in the midweek European game, but got the impression the manager wasn’t too happy”.

Hannah added: “Yep, got the impression the manager wasn’t too happy. Hamza Igmane came on a scored his first goal for the club, he’ll be buoyed by that and gets a start today.”

Rangers captain James Tavernier also dropped

Clement seems to have finally delivered the line-up that many fans have been crying out for during a struggle of a season so far.

James Tavernier drops out of the starting XI for the first time despite his form being well short of his best and supporters wanting him replaced, with Feyenoord loanee Neraysho Kasanwirjo finally given the chance to impress from the off.

And injury to Tom Lawrence in the European victory, coupled with the impressive partnership Connor Barron struck up with the restored Nico Raskin against the Romanians, sees the two paired once more with Mohamed Diomande in an advanced position ahead of them.

Rangers will hope that trio can start to establish more control in midfield as they are all too often passed through with ease, even if St Mirren shouldn’t be the most testing opposition.

Cyriel Dessers and James Tavernier are on the Rangers bench, with John Souttar missing.

Although Dessers has done a decent job delivering goals in the past year with other striker options dropping all around him he has split opinions among fans and pundits throughout.

The Nigerian’s form fluctuates greatly between impressive and maddening, so with Igamane now off the mark it is perhaps little surprise that he has been handed a second Rangers start.

Dessers was clearly upset about the eye issue in midweek and Clement said he apologised afterwards [Rangers Review, 24 October] so it is unlikely that it will be held against him long-term.

But whether it was part of the Belgian’s decision to drop the senior man to the bench, or whether that was more to do with resting his striker before the crucial trip to Pittodrie on 30 October to face Aberdeen, Igamane has a major opportunity to build on his first goal and stake a claim.

In other Rangers news, a senior Light Blues player has been told he has to leave the club permanently.
