'It's really sad' - Stevie Clifford blasts player who looks like he's checked out at Rangers

Rangers youngster Alex Lowry hasn’t shown enough signs that he can fulfil his potential, according to Stevie Clifford of the Four Lads Had A Dream podcast.

Speaking with Derek Clark on the Rangers Review (9 August), Clifford said that Lowry’s performance in the Gers’ 2-1 pre-season friendly defeat at Birmingham City suggested he doesn’t want to be at the club.

Lowry started the match in the number 10 position at St. Andrew’s, but was taken off at half-time by Philippe Clement with Birmingham 2-0 up, cutting short his first and only pre-season appearance.

When asked if Lowry is a player who sparks the ‘what could have been’ question, Clifford said: “At times he’s looked like an exciting player and given us reason to believe in flashes, but sadly it’s just never really worked.

“I watched him in that Birmingham friendly, and for 45 minutes he couldn’t have looked less interested in a Rangers jersey.

“He just looked like he didn’t want to be there. It’s really sad, because Alex Lowry had the world at his feet.”

Alex Lowry could be another player on the Rangers chopping block

Clement’s squad rebuild at Ibrox has had an overriding theme of bringing in youth to replace several senior and out-of-favour Gers players [Clifford, 27 July, bringing down the average age of his side in the process.

This shift in policy would usually be good news for a player like 21-year-old Lowry, but his lack of pre-season minutes, and a poor showing against Birmingham, show that he’s well down the pecking order.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement still has a question mark over the number 10 position at Rangers this season

The seemingly imminent departures of Todd Cantwell – who handed in a transfer request – and Ianis Hagi will open up a vacancy in attacking midfield, but it remains to be seen if Lowry will be staying put [Football Scotland, 6 August].

Mohamed Diomande has been pushed further forward in the Light Blues’ first two matches, but it’s inarguable that Clement will be hoping for an upgrade on Cantwell and Hagi in the number 10 role.

Lowry, who is in the final year of his contract, faces a make-or-break season at Ibrox, but with Clement’s overhaul still incomplete, it’s difficult to see him playing often enough to make a solid impression.

In other Rangers news, Clement revealed that visa issues prevented Robin Propper from making his Gers debut against Dynamo Kyiv.
