Czechia media were impressed by Vaclav Cerny as the Rangers winger featured in a dramatic 3-2 win over Ukraine on Tuesday (10 September).

The 26-year-old, who is on a season-long loan from Wolfsburg, assisted Pavel Sulc’s opening goal before threatening the Ukraine net with his shots from range.

Sulc would grab his brace before the half-time whistle blew, with West Ham United star Tomas Soucek firing home from the penalty spot to put the game out of reach from the visitors.

iSport [10 September] handed Cerny a 7/10 rating, writing: “That’s the kind of player the national team needs. Confident one-on-one, choosing unexpected solutions forward.

“He started with a clever perpendicular to the onrushing Zeleny, setting up a goal for Šulc.”

Rangers star Vaclav Cerny wows on international duty

To be described as “the kind of player the national team needs” is a huge compliment for Cerny, and it is really no surprise after hitting the ground running at Ibrox, on loan from the Bundesliga.

He has one goal and two assists in all competitions, even delivering in Champions League qualification, and has been even more influential in the final third than his goal contributions would suggest.

Philippe Clement is currently struggling for options on the wing, especially after Rabbi Matondo’s injury [Football Scotland], but the hope is that Oscar Cortes will be back in the squad after the international break.

Fans are often told not to fall in love with loan players, as many did with Brighton’s Abdallah Sima, and it already seems too late for some fans as Cerny quickly becomes a favourite at Ibrox.

The 26-year-old’s displays on international duty show exactly what he is capable of, and Clement will be praying that some of this form returns to Ibrox, all in one piece too.

In other Rangers news, Nils Koppen is facing more scrutiny as details emerge of a collapsed transfer this summer.
