Lawrence Shankland and Hearts are both aware of the interest from Rangers in a transfer but the Edinburgh side are “determined to stick to their guns”, the Daily Record reports.
According to Keith Jackson via the outlet’s website late on 29 July the Jambos will force Philippe Clement to “dig deep” if he decides to move ahead with a bid now that the funding is available.
The Belgian will reportedly be hoping that £3million is enough to land the Scotland international after he entered the final year of his contract this summer.
Clement admitted he had to sell to buy earlier in the window [Rangers Review, 13 July] but Sam Lammers’ sale to FC Twente for £2.8million has opened the door to new signings, with discussions now being held at Ibrox over whether to use it on Shankland or elsewhere.

Hearts are well within their rights to hold out for whatever they feel their captain is worth and if it proves to be more than what the Light Blues are willing to pay the wait and the speculation will likely go on for another few months.
His goals could feasibly fire either club to their objectives this season so there is an argument that he is worth a serious fee even allowing for his contract situation, but there is doubt that the Jam Tarts will get as much as £5m [Tam McManus, 29 July].
It is unlikely that Rangers would overpay for that very reason as they may hold out hope of signing him for free in a year.
With Cyriel Dessers and Danilo currently set to share the load up front that would be a risk, especially as new youngster Hamza Igamane has been conspicuous by his absence since signing.
Shankland himself is said to be eager to make the move to the club he supports if the opportunity is presented to him [Scottish Daily Mail, 1 July].
But the 28-year-old has demonstrated he isn’t the sort of player to force through a move so if Clement and Nils Koppen do come forward with an offer they will likely need to be prepared for some tough negotiations at Tynecastle.
In other Rangers news, a new bid is on the way for a “top quality” goal scorer that the Light Blues were chasing before Shankland during the transfer window.
