Ibrox View: Rangers board have finally done something worth applauding in record-breaking deal

Rangers supporters finally have something to shout about as the board secures the biggest back-of-shirt deal in the club’s history.

According to Jonny McFarlane via Rangers Review [23 November], the record-breaking deal with global fintech company Guavapay represented a 45 per cent increase on all previous deals.

The financial woes at Ibrox have been well-documented over the past few years, and all hope of progress was diminished when the Gers produced the 2023 annual report [29 October], outlining that the club operated a £17.2million loss for the financial year.

However, the Rangers board is finally heading in the right direction; the deal with Guavapay certainly represents a statement of intent from the Glaswegian outfit.

The Light Blues have been in turmoil on and off the pitch and have essentially become a laughing stock to many, but this now could be subject to change.

At Ibrox, the board is finally beginning to take shape. Nils Koppen was appointed technical director following his appointment at the start of the year as director of football recruitment, and the announcement of the long-awaited appointment of a new CEO is expected to be only weeks away [John Walker].

However, Rangers are not prepared to rest on their laurels and, as the Scottish Premiership prospects appear bleak, the board is focusing on more essential matters in helping to improve the financial landscape in Glasgow.

The deal with Guavapay is not the only ground-breaking deal to be secured this season. In October, the Gers announced a partnership with the Kindred Group, believed to be the “biggest” in Scottish football.

Rangers are set to receive £3m per year for the sponsorship deal – £500,000 more than Celtic earn from their current front-of-shirt sponsor.

While the grim fact remains that the Light Blues have a monumental mountain to climb to once again become competitive with rivals Celtic, the long road ahead to the summit of the SFPL is in full swing, and the future, for the first time in a long time, is starting to look promising for Rangers off the pitch.
