Man United have been dealt a serious blow by the “devastating” injury Mason Mount suffered during the 2-1 win v Man City at the Etihad.
This is according to former United chief scout manager Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected at the club where he spent over a decade, as he exclusively told Football Insider that questions must be asked of the medical team.
He questioned whether Mount was being forced back from his injuries to get him playing again given the number of times he has returned before being sidelined immediately.
Since making the move to Old Trafford in 2023, the 25-year-old has missed a combined 30 games through injury and has made just 32 appearances in total.
Ruben Amorim could provide no further insight into his injury following the Manchester Derby, but reiterated how much of an important player he can be when fit.
The new boss has spoken glowingly about Mount since his arrival and had big plans for him to be heavily involved in his first-choice starting XI, but injuries have scuppered those plans.
Brown has insisted that the latest knock has come as a “massive blow” to United, Amorim and Mount himself, who the former scout fears may be psychologically affected.
Man United medical team questioned after ‘devastating’ Mason Mount blow
Mount’s injuries have been a major talking point amongst fans since his arrival given the frustrating number of games he has missed.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience working closely with players at the top level in his time as the chief scout and assistant manager at Old Trafford, insisted the midfielder will be devastated by the injury and must be supported by the club.
“Questions have got to be asked about his situation,” he told Football Insider.
“You have to wonder why the medical team can’t seem to get it right with him.
“Ever since he’s been at United, he’s had injury problems. He comes back, plays ten minutes, then he’s forced off again, so why are they rushing him?
“It’s a very difficult situation because Amorim sees a lot in him as a first-team player.
“I feel sorry for the lad because when you have a recurring issue like this, it can play on your mind and it makes you scared to do too much in case it happens again.
“So from his point of view, it must be devastating, and I feel the same about Luke Shaw so I hope they are given the support of the club.
“But it’s a massive blow for United as well because he’s a player Amorim likes and he would be a part of his first-choice starting XI if he could stay fit.”
