Everton may be confident they can resume their pursuit of Ernest Nuamah after John Textor’s Lyon were hit with a huge financial punishment.
A provisional relegation from Ligue 1 and a transfer ban have both been laid on Textor’s doorstep barely months after he was pipped to securing a deal to buy out Farhad Moshiri at Goodison Park.
As a result, with Lyon now looking to keep their heads above water and prevent demotion from France’s top tier, the Toffees may be minded to return for Nuamah, whom they were keen on in the summer.
Nuamah’s provisional move to Merseyside was hijacked by Fulham on Deadline Day, yet the transfer never materialised after the Ghanaian winger chose to stay loyal to a now-financially crippled Lyon [Sky Sports, 31 August].
Ernest Nuamah transfer could be straight-forward for Everton
Signing a winger is top of Everton’s to-do list once the January transfer window opens [TEAMtalk, 9 October], with several promising names linked, and Nuamah a player who would certainly fit the bill.
While Toffees fans will be breathing a sigh of relief that Textor’s attempted takeover was unsuccessful, Dan Friedkin is still yet to take the reins at Goodison, leaving their future transfer budget uncertain.
However, with Lyon in a position where they’ll need to be raising funds fast, Nuamah’s loyalty to Les Gones will surely be overridden by a need to sell players, particularly those who’ve had concrete interest.
Orel Mangala, who did make the move to Goodison on a season-long loan, could see his £33.7million permanent transfer option activated by the Blues, which no doubt will come at Lyon’s behest.
It remains to be seen if the club’s interest in Nuamah was purely down to Textor’s anticipated influence on recruitment, but if they do re-enter the fray to sign him, don’t expect Lyon to put up much of a fight.
In other Everton news, two other Toffees forwards have been pictured in training as they continue their recoveries from injury.
