Vaclav Cerny has been a brilliant addition to Philippe Clement’s squad since joining Rangers in the summer.
The 27-year-old has notched six goals and five assists in 18 appearances across all competitions, largely making the right-wing spot his own, having joined on a season-long loan from Wolfsburg.
Cerny has displaced Ross McCausland from the starting XI and kept Dujon Sterling off the wing, starting eight of the Gers’ 11 Scottish Premiership matches and starring in the Europa League.
While the Czechia international’s deal at Ibrox is just a straight loan until the end of the season [Sky Sports], the hierarchy may have just been given a signal to strike a permanent deal for the player.
Speaking in a press conference on Friday (22 November), he said: “If it’s up to me, I would be open to talk, obviously, but I think it’s very, very soon to talk about it.
“Just let me focus on helping the team and achieve what we want to achieve, me personally and as a club. I think we’ve got plenty of time to talk about this.”
Rangers to sign Vaclav Cerny on permanent deal?
This kind of admission will certainly be music to fans’ ears after the player’s performances so far. It has been difficult to find goalscorers to add to Cyriel Dessers and James Tavernier at Ibrox.
Even now, there are ongoing concerns over the first-choice striker, given his inability to link up well in the final third, and Tavernier’s goal involvements have reduced significantly.
However, Cerny has been a bright light in an otherwise torrid campaign for the Light Blues and the club would likely prefer to keep him on a permanent deal rather than see him leave at the end of the season.
Of course, this would mean raising enough funds and given that he moved to the Bundesliga for £7million in the summer of 2023, Wolfsburg are unlikely to want to take a loss on the player.
Fans have been warned several times over falling in love with loan players, such as Brighton’s Abdallah Sima, but when they are playing as well as Cerny is, no one can blame them.
If the Rangers board are going to be serious about keeping the winger beyond his loan spell, they must start opening talks with him now before other clubs come in for his signature.
In other Rangers news, a pundit has shared new concerns over a behind-the-scenes development at Ibrox, “Quite the leap”.
