Stefan Borson: Man City to swoop for Rodri replacement in January

Manchester City will try and sign a replacement for Rodri in the January transfer window after he’s been ruled out for the rest of the season.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League champions will find it difficult to replace the Spain international due to the “enormous” price it can cost to sign central midfielders in the current market.

Rodri was forced off in the first half of Man City’s game against Arsenal following a collision with Thomas Partey.

Pep Guardiola has since confirmed the 28-year-old has undergone surgery after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the remainder of the campaign.

Man City face impossible task signing Rodri replacement

Borson suggested it’s almost impossible for the club to find a replacement for Rodri and it will be even more difficult in the January window.

“I think there’s a good chance they will look to sign someone,” Borson told Football Insider.

“They have been looking to bolster that part of the squad.

“Clearly, it’s almost impossible to replace a player who may win the Ballon d’Or.

“You are talking about trying to find almost an impossible replacement and you are trying to do it in a January window that we know is going to be fairly competitive.

“You are talking about a position that has now over time from a financial perspective become an enormously expensive position if you think about the Rice, Caicedo and Fernandez deals.

“You are talking about players now in that position who can go for the best part of £100million or more, so it’s going to be very hard for City to fill that gap.

“The likelihood is that they will just have to make do in some way, but I’m sure they will try in January.

“I just think it’s a very difficult thing to pull off, especially in a competitive situation as they will no doubt have.”
