Tottenham have approached Atalanta to sign ex-Everton defender Ben Godfrey, The Sun reports.

According to the news outlet’s print edition [24 December, pg48], Ange Postecoglou has identified the Englishman as one of the potential options to ease the defensive injury crisis in North London only six months after he left Everton for the Serie A in a £10 million deal.

Spurs will “definitely” be active in January with a new centre-back high on the agenda and are enticed by the prospect of Godfrey, who can operate anywhere across the backline.

Tottenham want to sign Ben Godfrey in January

Of all the reported targets being considered at Tottenham, Godfrey will be the last name the supporters wish to see arrive in North London.

The 26-year-old featured only 15 times in the Premier League for Everton last term before his move to Italy, wherein he has made only five substitute appearances for Atalanta.

Yes, the defensive options are dwindling at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but with Spurs also monitoring Feyenoord centre-back David Hancko [TBR Football], who is a regular starter in the Eredivisie and impressed in the 3-3 draw against Manchester City in the Champions League, Godfrey should never enter the discussion.

Furthermore, Tottenham have been urged to test the waters for Ben Chilwell after Chelsea boss Enzo Marseca admitted the full-back is free to pursue an exit from West London, and there will be plenty of options for Postecoglou to pursue in January.

The Australian is certainly feeling the loss of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, but a rash decision in the transfer market will do more harm than good.

While Godfrey fits the English quota, Tottenham has no other possible reason to pursue this transfer and should avoid this deal altogether.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs plan to raid EFL as a Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday transfer update drops.
