'Problem' - Pundit View: Tottenham 'Achilles heel' emerges after Arsenal goal controversy

Tottenham must not rely on fouls to be given after Gabriel’s controversial winning goal for Arsenal on Sunday (15 September), Paul Robinson has said.

Many fans were expecting the goal to be chalked off in the 1-0 loss after Gabriel pushed Cristian Romero before rising highest in the box to smash a header past Guglielmo Vicario.

However, the goal stood, condemning Ange Postecoglou’s team to their second defeat of the new Premier League season, with set-pieces once again emerging as a problem for the Lilywhites.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “Spurs have got to defend set-pieces better, it’s as simple as that. It’s been their Achilles heel for a long time. Arsenal relied on their set-plays and the back four.

“We know the midfielders they had missing, and still they had the attacking quality on the pitch. But it wasn’t their attacking players that won them the game; it was the way they used set pieces that won them the North London Derby.

“There may have been calls for a slight foul on Romero but you can’t rely on a foul to be given so a goal isn’t awarded. It’s not the first time Spurs have become undone by set-plays and it’s becoming a problem.”

Tottenham fail to capitalise on weakened Arsenal side in North London Derby defeat

Postecoglou will feel extremely disappointed not to walk away from the latest North London Derby with all three points, at least he should be, with some of his players just not turning up.

The Gunners were without Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard due to suspension and injury, respectively, with Postecoglou given a golden opportunity to win his first match against Arsenal.

Despite this, Mikel Arteta’s men were able to take advantage of Tottenham’s biggest weakness in set-pieces, scoring the only goal of the match from a corner.

Fans will continue to argue that Spurs should have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Romero, but conceding from corners and free-kicks continues to be a running theme.

In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou must be ready to axe one of his stars, he’s been dubbed a “massive disappointment”.
