'Done really well': Paul Merson thinks player Arsenal sold for £34m will play for England soon

Arsenal endured an eventful summer transfer window in terms of incomings and outgoings.

While Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino were their major signings, the Gunners snapped up Bournemouth’s Neto and Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling on deadline-day loan deals.

On the other hand, a handful of players long-standing players left the club in search of regular game time as Mikel Arteta attempted to fine-tune his squad.

One such player was Emile Smith Rowe, who joined Fulham for a fee believed to be in the region of £34m.

And Paul Merson believes the Hale End academy graduate will be recalled to the England squad if he continues his fine run of form at Craven Cottage.

Smith Rowe struggled with injuries and poor form for Arsenal and reluctantly agreed to leave his boyhood club for the sake of his career.

Merson heaped praise on the 24-year-old for his impressive start to life at Fulham as he tipped him to get his career back on track and represent England once again in the near future.

“Emile Smith Rowe has done well since joining Fulham,” Merson wrote in his column for Sportskeeda.

“He lost his way a bit at Arsenal with all the injuries and lack of playing time. If he keeps playing regularly, he will prove to be a brilliant signing for Fulham.

“He’s someone who chases lost causes and has got a footballing brain. All he has to do now is stay fit and he’ll soon be back in the England squad.”

Smith Rowe was right to leave Arsenal

The midfielder started just three Premier League games for Arsenal last season and failed to find the back of the net, which is simply not good enough for a club looking to compete on all fronts.

Arteta admitted he was sad to see Smith Rowe leave but suggested it was the right move for all parties involved.

Alan Shearer also sung Smith Rowe’s praises earlier this season and if the 24-year-old carries on in the same vein in the coming months, he could well earn a re-call to the Three Lions’ set-up.
