Jefte was hammered for his “absolutely criminal defending” for Rangers as they went a goal down to former player Andy Halliday vs Motherwell, by a stunned Michael Stewart.
The pundit reacted live on the Premier Sports coverage of the League Cup semi-final on 3 November as the Gers went 1-0 down 25 minutes in at Hampden Park, when Halliday stretched to volley home a Steve Sneddon cross at the back post.
Rather than challenge for the ball Brazilian Jefte had turned away and was running out of the box to the complete disbelief of Stewart.
He said (3.30pm): “You can see [James] Tavernier and [Jack] Butland are deep in conversation, they’re pointing here and pointing there, there’s big concerns.
“Andy Halliday, just showing the desire, it’s [Tawanda] Maswanhise over the top, simple defending, and this is an unbelievable ball but what is Jefte doing at the back post?!
“That is absolutely criminal defending. This is a great ball in from Seddon, Jefte’s running away and Andy Halliday just wants to get in there and get on the end of it.
“Incredible. How the defender, rather than filling round and recognising the danger, decides to run away, it’s unbelievable.”
Philippe Clement on the hot seat at Rangers
Clement needs a result in this cup semi to take a tiny bit of the heat off him from the fans at the very least.
But on the basis of the season to date, where most of the big tests have been failed to this point, the prospect of a final appearance against Celtic looks more daunting than it does an opportunity.
The position among the hierarchy at Ibrox, or what currently remains of a hierarchy, appears to be that the slog this campaign has recently turned into has already been factored in since they decided to back him ahead of the season [Tom English, 1 November].
So it is difficult to say how far this result will sway opinion with those in power one way or the other, even as Hugh Keevins suggested via the Daily Record ahead of kick off that another set back would force the club to act.
It has been more of the same in the first half at Hampden and the disarray at the back as the Gers went behind looked emblematic of the issues under Clement.
So without a major change after the break this performance is going to heap more pressure on the Belgian, and his bosses.
In other Rangers news, an “unheard of” development ahead of this game may have made Clement’s exit something the club can’t afford not to go through with.
