Alan Shearer names the one signing that could deliver Arsenal the Premier League title
Will they make a late move?
Alan Shearer believes Arsenal can end their 20-year wait for the Premier League title if they make one more signing before the end of the transfer window.
The Gunners have finished second in each of the last two Premier League seasons, with Mikel Arteta restoring them to title challengers, but not being able to hunt down the relentless Manchester City at the top of the table.
But after the big-money signings of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz last summer, Arsenal have been far more reserved in the transfer window this time around.
Riccardo Calafiori’s arrival from Bologna and David Raya’s permenant move from Brentford represent their only moves of the window thus far.
A big question still remains over Arsenal’s options at the top of the pitch, with Gabriel Jesus flattering to deceive last season and Eddie Nketiah still linked with an exit.
And Shearer believes the Gunners can put themselves in pole position for the title if they make a late swoop to bring in a marquee attacker before the window shuts.
‘I think it’ll be a really tight race for the Premier League title this season and I see more than two teams competing for it,’ the former England striker told Betfair.
‘I think the usual teams you’d expect to be up there who’ve already spent a few quid will put themselves in better positions than what they were last year.
‘There’s still so much that can happen in the transfer window. If Arsenal go out and sign a statement centre forward, then I really think they would have an excellent chance of winning the title.
‘I think that could make the difference for them. Keep in mind how brilliant they were defensively last season, but they’ve now gone out and spent a fortune on another really, really good defender in Riccardo Calafiori. I still think they do need to strengthen in that centre-forward position and that could make the difference.
‘I do think it’ll be between Man City and Arsenal again but if Arsenal go out and sign a striker then I’d fancy them to win the title this year.’
Ivan Toney, who has just on year left o his contract at Brentford, remains a player heavily linked with a move but boss Thomas Frank recently appeared more optimistic that the Englishman will not move in this window.
Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is another linked with Arsenal, but the Nigerian appears more likely to move to Chelsea, with Romelu Lukaku potentially moving the other way.
