Sandro Tonali set for Newcastle United return against Nottingham Forest
He's been out since October 2023.
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will be available for the Magpies’ Carabao Cup clash against Nottingham Forest on August 27th following the end of his ten-month suspension for breaching betting rules.
The Italian was suspended in 2023 after being found guilty of breaking betting rules during his time at AC Milan.
The Federazione Italiana Giuoco had initially suggested that Tonali would be suspended until August 28th, which would have ruled him out of the Carabao Cup fixture against Forest.
But Newcastle have confirmed that Tonali’s ban runs until August 27th, which means he’s available for the trip to the Forest Ground.
It remains to be seen if Eddie Howe will select Tonali for the fixture but the Italian has been training regularly in recent months.
The Italian Football Federation confirmed that Tonali had breached the rule which prohibits players placing bets on football events organised by the federation, Uefa and Fifa. He was also fined 20,000 euros (£17,380).
In May, the FA handed Tonali a two-month suspended ban after he admitted to further braeches of betting rules following his move to England.
The Magpies host Tottenham in the Premier League on September 1st, which could mark Tonali’s return to St James’ Park.
Howe’s side host Southampton on Saturday in their opening Premier League match of the season.
