Chris Beesley believes Vitaliy Mykolenko was “all at sea” when Everton lost 1-0 to Southampton in the Premier League at the start of November.
The defender has been in patchy form throughout the season and Beesley noticed he showed an improvement against the Hammers in the Toffees’ most recent top-flight clash when he had Jarrad Branthwaite back next to him.
Writing for the Liverpool ECHO (17 November), journalist Beesley shared his thoughts on the Ukraine international.
“Mykolenko, in particular, had been all at sea at Southampton just seven days later and was caught out of position for what proved to be the winning goal for the hosts late on,” he wrote.
“But against the Hammers he was showing the kind of assurance that made him one of Everton’s most-improved performers last season with Branthwaite’s protection”.
Vitaliy Mykolenko could lose his Everton starting spot if his form doesn’t pick up
Now that Nathan Patterson is getting back in action, it feels like Mykolenko is going to have to pick his form up if he wants to keep his starting role in Sean Dyche’s team.
There have been times this term when the left-back has been one of the Toffees’ best defenders but more often than not, he’s left a lot to be desired.
Ashley Young is the other fit full-back option Everton have at the moment and despite being 39-years-old, he’s been solid for the Merseyside outfit this term.
Patterson may have been injured for most of the season thus far but now the Scotsman is getting back, Dyche will have some tough decisions to make.
When the former Rangers man has been fit in prior seasons, he’s seemed like a solid option at full-back and could certainly give Mykolenko a run for his money.
Granted, Young would have to move to left-back but when the form of the veteran is taken into account, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
In other Everton news, the Toffees have been linked with a move for Arthur Melo as Juventus are willing to sell the Brazilian playmaker.
