Orel Mangala will surely be worried about his future at Everton after the Toffees’ latest transfer links to Juventus playmaker Arthur Melo.

The Brazilian has been linked with a switch to Merseyside since the summer and as the January transfer window is now edging closer, the rumour mill has started to turn once again.

Mangala may have only been brought in during the summer but if his recent performances for club and country are anything to judge from, it feels unlikely that his stay will be made permanent, even if Lyon are in some financial difficulty.

Especially because Thiago Motta is now willing to sell Arthur after the Brazilian hasn’t played a minute for the Old Lady this term [Diario Sport, 14 November].

Why Everton should sign Arthur Melo from Juventus

The former Liverpool man may not have played for Motta’s team this season but looking at his returns for Fiorentina in 2023/24, it’s evident that he still has what it takes to be a top-level performer.

Arthur chipped in with six goal contributions last term and that was all while being used as a defensive midfielder.

Everton may have brought in both Mangala and Tim Iroegbunam to help provide cover in the centre of the park but as the latter of the two is now ruled out for an extended period, Sean Dyche finds himself short.

Mangala hasn’t yet fully got to grips to life at Everton, which makes it feel like plenty more could come from the Merseyside outfit’s midfield.

Arthur would help provide additional creativity to Everton’s team and would help ease the burden from the shoulders of Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye who have often been the Toffees’ creative forces this term.

The fact he’s not wanted by the Serie A giants could also mean that he’s available for a cut-price fee which would certainly work in Everton’s favour.
