Ally McCoist moots 'Disaster' live on air after what he's seen at Everton this season

Everton playing Championship football in their new Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium next season would be a “disaster”, Ally McCoist has said.

The Toffees have started the 2024/25 campaign in torrid form, earning zero points from their opening four matches, including back-to-back 3-2 comeback losses against Bournemouth and Aston Villa.

Sean Dyche has come under massive scrutiny due to the manner of these defeats, and rightly so, with the Toffees’ only win of the season coming against Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup.

Speaking live on talkSPORT on Tuesday (17 September, 7:52am), McCoist said: “I was at the Bournemouth game when they were 2-0 up with 84 minutes on the clock, going on to lose 3-2. Of course, it’s a sore one, unbelievably sore.

“But that could have a mental effect because it’s not just a normal defeat. You have to get that out of your system as quickly as possible, and the problem is they go 2-0 up against Aston Villa before losing 3-2 again.

“They’ve got to put it right. I think they will put it right because you would fancy Sean Dyche to sort his team out defensively. I think they’ll have enough because, let’s be honest, it would be a disaster if they’re not playing in the new stadium in the top flight.”

Could Everton be playing Championship football next season?

Dyche has worked wonders during his time at Goodison Park, and with 34 games of the Premier League season remaining, there is plenty of time to turn things around.

However, it remains to be seen if the current manager will be allowed the opportunity to pull the Toffees out of the dreaded relegation zone following a dreadful start to the season.

Of course, Dyche’s side are not the same without Jarrad Branthwaite in the centre of defence, and he is unlikely to feature against Southampton on Tuesday 17 September [The Mirror].

But, conceding 13 goals in the first four games is inexcusable whether he is in the side or not.

There is so much excitement around the move to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, but there will be little to cheer about if the Evertonians are welcoming Championship teams to the new ground next season.

Something must change after throwing away two-goal leads against the Cherries and Villa, and it must change quickly if Dyche wants to remain in charge until the end of the season.
