Luca Gunter continues to prove to Ange Postecoglou that he is worthy of a first-team opportunity at Tottenham.

Just last week, on Friday 20 September, Gunter was in “outstanding” form despite Spurs’ Under-21s losing 4-1 to Fulham’s Under-21s in Premier League 2.

Only a day later, Guglielmo Vicario had an afternoon to forget as Spurs beat Brentford 3-1 in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It rounded off a difficult week for Spurs’ first-team goalkeepers after Fraser Forster’s struggles in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The 36-year-old was so poor in the 2-1 victory at Coventry City (18 September) that there were calls for him to be replaced.

And it seems as though Gunter was paying close attention to those performances, as he once again put in a top display on Tuesday (24 September), leaving Postecoglou with no choice but to hand him a first-team opportunity.

Unfortunately, it was another defeat for Spurs’ Under-21s as they were beaten 2-0 by Exeter City in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

It leaves the North London side needing results to go their way in Southern Group G on matchday three – when they face Swindon Town – if they are to advance to the knockout rounds of the competition.

However, one player who could leave the pitch with his head held high was Gunter.

As per Spurs’ official website (24 September), the 19-year-old denied Millenic Alli with a “superb” save during the first half.

The shot-stopper made another important stop in the second half, and couldn’t do much about either of the goals he conceded.

As a result, considering the struggles of the first-team goalkeepers, and yet another top display from Gunter, Postecoglou needs to hand the youngster a chance to prove himself.

And with the UEFA Europa League coming up, he has the perfect opportunity to do just that. Forster is past his best and will soon be a part of Spurs’ history.

However, Gunter is the future. Therefore, why not hand him an opportunity if Vicario is to be rested?

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou will likely drop a 27-year-old international against Qarabağ FK in the Europa League.
