Ange Postecoglou has delivered the brutal truth about recent results at Tottenham following questions about their defensive displays.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson insisted that the manager would have been as honest as the players as he was in the media after recent defeats.

This comes after the boss labelled the 3-2 defeat to Brighton the “worst defeat since I’ve been here” in his post-match interview with Sky Sports as he couldn’t hold back his frustrations.

Tottenham led the game and looked in control going into half-time with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but threw all three points away with defensive errors in the second half.

Since arriving in North London, Postecoglou has been far from reserved with his comments in the press, with his honest and relaxed style becoming a feature of his media work.

This has, at times, led to criticism when his side suffers frustrating defeats like against Brighton, but his honest review of the way the game had got away from them was a reality check for many.

The Brighton defeat led to renewed questions about the way Postecoglou’s teams set up, and Robinson has insisted the boss must now address those issues.

However, he has insisted that his comments in the press, while very critical of his side, were a harsh reality, as he praised the boss’ honesty and openness.

“I like him, I think he’s honest and he’s open,” he told Football Insider.

“You get real emotion and truth from him in a press conference.

“You saw him after the Brighton game, he just spoke the truth and he was genuinely disappointed by the performance his team had given.

“And he’ll have told the players that just as much as he did the media.

“He doesn’t send the team out to be wide open and leave loads of spaces, he’ll be saying to play high, press high and keep a high line, but defensively they’ll have to work hard.

“He’s a man of vast experience looking at what he’s won, he’s a very intellectual and clever coach, and he’s not sending out his players to lose a two-goal lead.

“That’s a situation he will address but I think the players have to take some responsibility too.”
