Newcastle handed big Alexander Isak contract boost after 'talks'

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has ‘shown a willingness to come to the table’ as talks over a new deal continue.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes keeping ahold of the 25-year-old is of ‘paramount importance’ for Newcastle but admits the club’s progression is being hampered by FFP and PSR.

Newcastle have plenty of time to negotiate a new deal with the Sweden international with his current contract not due to expire until 2028.

Isak managed just one goal and one assist in his first six games of the season before breaking his toe, an injury that has sidelined him for Newcastle’s last five matches.

Newcastle urged to secure new Alexander Isak deal

The striker ended last season as the Premier League’s third-highest goalscorer, just being Man City’s Erling Haaland and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer on 21.

Newcastle have struggled in front of goal so far this season, scoring just eight goals in their opening seven league games, making them the division’s joint-seventh lowest scorers.

“If he is stalling on a contract, at least for the Newcastle fans, the negotiations have opened and he showed a willingness to come to the table”, Robinson told Football Insider.

“He’s a quality player when he’s fit but he’s always going to be prone to hamstring problems.

“I do think it’s an area they’re light in and it’s of key importance that they keep him.

“They’re the richest club in the world, but they’re having to play by these FFP and PSR rules that everyone’s having to abide by.

“It’s stunting their growth a little bit, it’s not allowing them to close the gap on Man City and Arsenal who have been able to spend whatever they want for however many years.

“The ruling is unfortunate for Newcastle because like I said it stunts the growth and it stops them developing to a level and getting to a level that they are capable of financially very quickly.

“They’re not able to because of the rules and I think when you look at the rules and you look at the way they’ve got to do things in the transfer windows keeping a player like Isak I think it’s of paramount importance.”
