Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers have got to “look over their shoulder” at the Dons after their “amazing” start this term.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it is “no longer their birthright” to wrap up a second-place Scottish Premiership finish, as they have done in the last three seasons.
Aberdeen have maintained a 100% record this season after 13 games in all competitions of the 2024-25 campaign.
However, the Dons face a stark challenge this weekend when they take on league leaders Celtic – who have also won all seven top-flight games this term.
Jimmy Thelin only arrived at Pittodrie in the summer but is already being linked with jobs south of the border after his work with Aberdeen.
Rangers ‘must be looking over their shoulder’ at Aberdeen, says Wyness
Wyness suggested it is too early for those “bizarre” links to emerge.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I wouldn’t get carried away.
“As we stand, Aberdeen are the only undefeated club in the whole of Europe.
“That’s amazing. But you’ve got to look at the fixtures, six have been in the cup against pretty poor opposition.
“It isn’t quite the 13 wins in a row it seems.
“They’re also facing Celtic at the weekend, and there are already rumours about Thelin heading south to the Championship – it’s quite bizarre.
“Nevertheless, they’ve done it. But it’s not enough evidence to show they will be really challenging.
“Rangers have got to look over their shoulder now, there’s already a five-point gap between the two clubs.
“It’s certainly no longer their birthright to finish second.
“They’ve got to be concerned that it’s not just their own spiral at the moment, but other clubs are also becoming better.”
