Ange Postecoglou is “on the road to trouble” at Tottenham after his bust-up with his own supporters was screened on air, says Robbie Savage.
The Australian exchanged words with away fans after his side were beaten 1-0 at Bournemouth on 5 December, slipping to 10th in the table.
And Savage insisted in his Mirror column that poor results mean the Spurs boss has to rein in his attacking instincts or his bosses will be focused on missing out on £40million of Champions League qualification cash.
He wrote: “I don’t understand who Postecoglou thought would benefit by arguing with the fans – certainly not him. You can’t win in those situations – they are best avoided.”
Les Ferdinand also questioned what the Tottenham manager hoped to achieve from getting involved, speaking immediately after on Amazon Prime Video.
Daniel Levy will have an eye on the Tottenham boss
Football Insider opinion
It goes without saying that the 59-year-old will have to find some consistency soon or he will be risking his job.
He is arguably a victim of his own early success after arriving from Celtic last year, but by any measure it is unsustainable to go from thrashing Man City 4-0 at the Etihad to picking up just one point from the next two fixtures against Fulham and Bournemouth, while also throwing away a lead in Europa against Roma.
Pep Guardiola’s side may be in more disarray than ever before but the game on 23 November showed what this Spurs side can do at their best.
However, Daniel Levy is never going to accept that sort of performance once every few games, having seen Spurs also lose twice last month to Galatasaray and Ipswich off the back of another excellent 4-1 win over Aston Villa.
Postecoglou is not the only manager who is playing fast and loose with his own job prospects while insisting on sticking to his tactical principles.
But on a basic level that only pays off with the bosses if it gets results, and right now he is only doing that intermittently.
It seems crazy to think just a fortnight after destroying the reigning champions, but if there aren’t signs of a revival soon Tottenham are already being tipped to sack by Christmas.
In other news, Spurs have a new playing flying in within days in order to make an impact on the slumping squad.
