Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed Michael Carrick to be named the next Manchester United manager if Erik ten Hag is sacked.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Middlesbrough boss has proven he is a “very good” manager during his time with the Championship club.
Man United have made their worst start to a league season in 35 years as they currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.
The Manchester giants’ hierarchy held a meeting at the INEOS offices in Knightsbridge on Tuesday, where Ten Hag’s future was discussed.
Old Trafford chiefs have insisted it was a regular meeting that was already planned in the diary as Sir Jim Ratcliffe led the talks with chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.
Carrick, who, like, current United No2 and fellow contender Ruud van Nistelrooy, is a club legend, played 464 games for United and managed the club for two matches in 2021.
Michael Carrick could help bring back Man United ethos
But Wyness believes appointing a former player such as Carrick could be the route Ratcliffe and his staff decide to go down.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There are various rumours whether they will go for like a Thomas Tuchel or will it be a Michael Carrick and have more of a managerial coach type situation rather than a Tuchel type bigger name.
“I think they might go for the second route and try and get the Man United ethos back to what it was before with an ex-player like Carrick managing the squad.
“He’s proven to be a very good manager, so that’s where I think they may go.
“But no one knows at the moment which way Ratcliffe is going to jump.
“They are starting to reap the rewards of a very bad, difficult off-season when everybody thought Ten Hag was going to be sacked, so all these sorts of things are coming home to roost.
“It’s a bad issue for Man United.
“We are already seven games into the season and it’s not looking good.”
