Jamie Carragher made a comment when speaking about Liverpool on Sky Sports which seemed to surprise Kelly Cates.

The man from Bootle was discussing Liverpool‘s transfer business live from the pitch at Anfield ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash between Arne Slot’s side and Brentford, when he made a remark which took the daughter of Sir Kenny Dalglish aback.

What Jamie Carragher said about Liverpool to surprise Kelly Cates

As aforesaid, Carragher was discussing recruitment at Liverpool, praising the Reds for a calm approach in the market as others – such as Chelsea – instead adopt a scattergun approach.

In passing, the 46-year-old mentioned that Liverpool are close to signing Giorgi Mamardashvili in a £30m deal from Valencia, with plans for the Georgia international to eventually replace Alisson Becker whenever the Brazil international decides to leave Anfield.

Cates seemingly had not heard about this, as the Sky Sports presenter replied “are they actually?” in response to Carragher.

Interestingly, Alisson himself has heard of this plan, stating that he appreciated the fact Liverpool asked for his opinion on the transfer before approaching Valencia.

The Brazilian told the Telegraph: “I think it was a good idea, I knew about (Mamardashvili) before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think. They are doing the right thing in my point of view, but, on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, I will stay.”

Alisson has a contract at Anfield until July 2026.

Fear not, Liverpool fans – the Reds are not planning to leave Mamardashvili on the bench for years until Alisson leaves.

There are plans for Liverpool to send Mamardashvili back to Valencia on loan initially, before assessing the situation again next summer – according to Spanish news outlet Super Deporte.

The move has been made by Liverpool amid doubts over the long term future of Caoimhin Kelleher at Anfield too – the Republic of Ireland international also has a contract which expires in July 2026, and has been tipped to leave Merseyside in order to become No.1 elsewhere.
