Aston Villa star now on his way back to B6 after suffering injury on international duty

Aston Villa are set to welcome Ezri Konsa back from international duty after England confirmed that the defender is leaving the camp due to injury.

The Aston Villa centre-back was forced off at half-time of the 3-0 win over Greece in midweek for the Three Lions.

England interim manager Lee Carsley said after the game that Konsa was suffering with a hip problem and couldn’t continue.

Lee Carsley confirms Ezri Konsa is heading back to Aston Villa due to injury

On Saturday, Carsley confirmed that the Villa defender would be leaving the England camp due to the injury he picked up in their last game.

“He’s been assessed by the medical team. The scan results are back and now he’ll go back to Villa this afternoon,” Carsley told reporters at his pre-match presser.

“Like I said, we won’t take any risk of any of the players. Apart from Ezri we’re in good condition.”

The England website also confirmed that Konsa ‘will return to Villa ahead of Sunday’s Nations League game against Republic of Ireland after picking up an injury in Greece on Thursday.’

Konsa is the tenth player to pull out of the England squad for November’s internationals since Carsley named his final selection last week.

Aaron Ramsdale, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Jack Grealish, Jarrad Branthwaite and Phil Foden also pulled out of the squad.

Konsa’s Villa teammate Morgan Rogers remains in the England squad and, after the international break, is expected to put pen to paper on a new contract at Villa.

Another unwelcome headache for Unai Emery

Konsa’s injury-enforced return is yet another blow for Villa, who have suffered a major downturn in form in recent weeks.

Unai Emery’s charges have slipped to ninth in the Premier League table and have not won in the top flight since 19 October.

Villa have also lost their last four games in all competitions, so the prospect of losing Konsa will give the head coach another unwelcome headache.

Konsa has been a key player for Villa this season, taking part in all but one of their Premier League games this term and playing the full 90 minutes in each of their Champions League encounters.

Villa are next in action on Saturday 23 November when they host Crystal Palace in a 3pm Premier League kick-off.
