'At the last moment': Paul Robinson says VAR made a big mistake during Crystal Palace 2-1 Southampton

Crystal Palace came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Southampton at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

Goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Eberechi Eze cancelled out a 16th minute opener by Tyler Dibling – moving the Eagles up to 15th in the Premier League.

However – while covering the game for BBC Final Score – Paul Robinson said that he feels Michael Salisbury and those in the VAR booth over at Stockley Park made a mistake, one Ivan Juric will surely be furious about after seeing his Southampton side throw away three precious points against Crystal Palace.

Paul Robinson feels Jean-Philippe Mateta fouled Aaron Ramsdale

The man who won 41 caps for England believes VAR were wrong to award Chalobah’s goal.

Mateta could quite clearly be seen holding Ramsdale back from the ball with his arm, which stopped the Southampton No.30 from being able to challenge aerially.

However – despite a VAR check – the goal was allowed to stand, much to the frustration of the England international and Juric, who Jamie Carragher criticised recently.

Robinson said: “It is a foul on the goalkeeper. When you jump for a ball with your arms up as a keeper the slightest of touches puts you off balance. Jean-Philippe Mateta runs across Aaron Ramsdale and puts his arm across him, he gets across the middle of him and takes his arm away at the last moment.”

Robinson made 374 Premier League appearances in between the sticks for Leeds, Tottenham, Blackburn and Burnley – so he is experienced enough to speak with authority on this particular incident.

What Trevoh Chalobah said about controversial moment in Crystal Palace 2-1 Southampton

The Crystal Palace No.27 is understandably arguing that his goal was a legitimate one.

Chalobah – who has impressed Chelsea fans while on loan at Selhurst Park – told Premier League Productions (via BBC Sport): “I just try and chip in here and there. As a defender it’s important to get clean sheets though. I was confident it was going to be a goal, I wasn’t worried about that (VAR).”

The man from Sierra Leone now has three goals in 12 Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace this season – a fine return for a central defender, to say the least.
