Rangers fans and the board are unlikely to have Philippe Clement’s back if the club are in second or third for too long, believes John McGarry.
The Daily Mail journalist, in his column on 7 October, wrote that with Aberdeen starting the season so well, the pressure is ramping up on the Belgian at Ibrox.
Both Celtic and Aberdeen have won their first seven games while Gers are in third with 16 points..
The report on 7 October reads: “Red tide is rising… and it could spell bad news for Clement if Thelin’s Dons continue to keep Rangers in the shade.
“In golfing parlance, Clement has shot par for the course. While the credit for winning the League Cup and topping a Europa League group evaporated as the title and the Scottish Cup were painfully lost, there have been just enough positives along the way to suggest that he’s on the right track. Just not quite enough to believe the team will arrive at the desired place anytime soon.
“He needs time and patience to get there. While the good news is the board and most supporters still have his back, the reality is that situation won’t last if Rangers are second in the table for long never mind third.”
Philippe Clement must turn things around quickly at Rangers
Tactically, the Belgian must find a more consistent approach that not only secures victories but does so convincingly, thus regaining fan confidence.
This might involve refining his defensive setup to ensure fewer lapses and a more dynamic offensive play to counter the robust performances of rivals.
Additionally, Clement should focus on improving the team’s mental resilience, particularly in big matches, to avoid the kind of capitulations seen in previous derbies.
Engaging with the fans through transparent communication about his vision and progress could also foster patience and understanding, crucial for maintaining support during a transitional phase.
Making silly excuses after games in press conferences is not going to land with the fanbase as they’re watching the same match as he is.
Ultimately, delivering silverware or at least strong performances in domestic and European competitions will be key to silencing critics and securing his position at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, the club are now in line for a larger windfall amid a recent £44.3million update.
