BBC Sport has shared the “most likely” slot for Everton to host Liverpool in the Premier League after the clash was postponed on Saturday.
The final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park – barring the clubs meeting in the FA Cup – was called off on 7 December as Storm Darragh wreaked havoc on the UK, with the North West one of the most affected regions.
As per The Independent [7 December], the relevant authorities have a headache finding an ideal date to reschedule the fixture that suits both sides.
However, BBC Sport reported on Monday [9 December] that the week commencing 17 February has been identified as the “most likely” time to pencil in the Merseyside derby, but will be contingent on Liverpool securing a top-eight finish in the Champions League.
Everton could be a new-look side when they face Liverpool at Goodison Park
The feelings on the Blue half of Merseyside are mixed following the postponement of the derby, with Everton heading into the clash in a rare vein of form after the 4-0 win against Wolves.
Meanwhile, Liverpool were reeling off a 3-3 draw against Newcastle United and would have lined up without Alexis Mac Allister, who picked up his fifth yellow card for the campaign at St James’ Park.
However, form goes out the window in a Merseyside derby and with Arne Slot undoubtedly out for blood after dropping points in the Premier League title race, Sean Dyche should feel relieved his fate will not be in the hands of his cross-city rivals.
Furthermore, the Blues could prepare for the Goodison Park send-off as a whole new outfit, with The Friedkin Group expected to complete the proposed takeover in time for the New Year.
Whether or not Dyche will remain at the Everton helm to take charge of the Merseyside derby remains to be seen, but still, with the January transfer window around the corner under new ownership, further recruits could reshape the Toffees.
The reverse fixture at Anfield will take place on 2 April, only five matches later than the proposed date for the Goodison Park clash, and the momentum from a victory on home soil could turn the tide across Stanley Park.
Believe it or not, Storm Darragh was a blessing in disguise for Everton. Let’s hope the Toffees are in a better state all-around come the time of the rescheduled fixture, whenever that may be.
