Birmingham City are pushing to close a deal for Rangers defender Ben Davies as quickly as possible so he can face Leyton Orient this weekend, according to the Daily Record.
The paper reported via their website at lunchtime on 23 August that manager Chris Davies wants to finalise the move within the next 24 hours so the centre-back can be in the squad the League One clash.
A loan-to-buy deal is expected for the Ibrox defender who is said to be on a “big wage” in Glasgow after his arrival from Liverpool two years ago.
The “big-spending” English club would have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season, with the manager familiar with his namesake from their time at Anfield and Preston North End.
Rangers to offload former Liverpool defender
Davies’ £4million signing under Giovanni van Bronckhorst [Sky Sports] is one that never really worked out and has provided the Light Blues with value for money.
The 29-year-old did make 38 appearances in his first season in Glasgow but only 20 ever since so a departure feels long overdue.
Philippe Clement has been desperate to shift such players out this summer in order to make space for his own signings but since Connor Goldson and Sam Lammers were sold there has been a frustrating lack of progress.
Michael Beale appeared to be ready to offload Davies this time last year but the Englishman’s reluctance to go at the time apparently scuppered the chances of bringing Harry Souttar to partner with his brother John [The 4th Official, 31 August].
Birmingham may have been relegated to the English third tier but are showing ambition as they target an immediate return, so this could be a move that works out for all parties.
And assuming it goes through it would certainly help if Davies, both manager and player, do go up to the Championship and a permanent move is seen through.
