Clement shares Cantwell exit update as Rangers B Team absence explained

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has admitted that it wasn’t his decision that Todd Cantwell shouldn’t play for the B Team.

The Gers boss confirmed earlier in the summer that the Englishman had handed in a request to depart Ibrox this summer, but with only days left in the window, no exit appears to be imminent.

While fellow first-team outcast Ianis Hagi has been playing a regular role in the Light Blues’ B Team Cantwell is yet to feature in a reserve’s game and Clement has suggested that the player’s decision, not his.

As quoted by the Rangers Review on Friday (23 August) he said: “Todd made his own opinion about things, why he doesn’t want to stay in Scotland and I don’t speak only about Rangers.

“It’s more Scotland. Why he wanted to leave. So those are decisions made for me. And it’s seeing what’s a good deal for them, but also for the club and I will hear when it’s the case. Until now it was not the case, apparently.”

When asked why Cantwell was not playing for the B-Team, Clement said: “I’m not going to go into details about that. I can say it’s not my decision.”

Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers after Ibrox transfer update?

It is clear that Cantwell has absolutely no desire to play for Rangers in any capacity this season as Clement’s comments suggest that the midfielder doesn’t even want to feature for the B Team.

While Hagi has used the reserves as an opportunity to not only showcase his talents but also maintain his fitness, Cantwell appears to have already distanced himself from the Gers ahead of the transfer deadline.

Clement had previously suggested that the door would never be closed to the Englishman at Ibrox. While that may remain true from the manager’s side, the 26-year-old doesn’t look set to extend the olive branch anytime soon.

Hopefully, a solution can be found that suits all parties involved sooner rather than later. It is in neither Rangers’ or Cantwell’s interest for this saga to drag on beyond the 30 August deadline so a transfer has to be agreed soon.

In other Rangers news, Clement has been told to take his medicine and hold new talks with Ianis Hagi after a contract update emerged
