Bill Leckie has taken a swipe at Rangers for giving Philippe Clement a new contract amid the search for a new chief executive officer.

The Gers are set to appoint St Mirren vice-chairman Jim Gillespie [Scottish Sun, 17 August] for the vacant position after James Bisgrove left the club earlier this year.

Leckie has questioned why anyone would want to take the reigns at the Light Blues given the ongoing troubles at the club and cited Clement’s contract as another wrong move by the club.

Writing for The Scottish Sun [19 August], Leckie said: “If there was one piece of advice I’d give right now to the bookie’s favourite for a job that could either be the holy grail or a poisoned chalice, it would simply be this: Whoever did Philippe Clement’s deal, get them to draw up yours too.”

Philippe Clement is not the problem at Rangers

Clement can’t be blamed for cleaning up the mess left by Michael Beale. He inherited a squad of underperforming and wantaway players and has been left to sell his highest-earning players to build a side capable of competing in the Scottish Premiership and Europe.

Champions League qualification and the resulting £40m windfall [Scottish Daily Mail] would have gone a long way in helping the Belgian sign the required players to compete this season.

It wasn’t to be, and the club now have 11 days left of the transfer window to add to the limited resources at Clement’s disposal.

Rangers desperately need a figurehead to take charge of the circus ongoing at the club and guide them on an upward trajectory, and it seems Gillespie is the man who will take the reigns.

A return to Ibrox would help lift the spirits among the Rangers faithful. The ongoing financial mismanagement at the club is bleak, and with no light at the end of the tunnel, Gillespie will have a monumental task to steady the ship if appointed.

Rangers chairman John Bennett and Clement need all the help they can get to lead the club back to the top of the division and become regular competitors in the Champions League.

It’s time for the wrong decisions to be put right and end the culture of failure at the club.

In other Rangers news, a midfielder wanted by Gers is finally set to seal his multi-million transfer before the 30 August deadline.
