'Bizarre' - Tom English reacts to Rangers transfer news in past 24 hours

BBC Scotland chief sports writer Tom English has reacted to Todd Cantwell leaving Rangers for Blackburn Rovers on deadline day.

The 26-year-old secured his long-awaited exit from the Light Blues on 30 August for a fee that could rise as high as £650,000 [The 4th Official].

English reacted to the news of Cantwell’s up-and-down Ibrox spell on his X account [30 August], which ends after 18 months.

He said: “And so ends a thoroughly bizarre episode.”

Philippe Clement has finally waved goodbye to Cantwell after a long and drawn-out transfer saga this summer.

It has been a game of cat and mouse between the player and the club. Reports emerged that the Englishman had refused to train with the reserves following his transfer request but he denied those claims on his Instagram [31 August].

Either way, Rangers are right to feel hard done by in this saga. Clement had hoped to recoup a multi-million-pound transfer fee for the player earlier in the summer and has had to settle for a fee less than £1million.

Despite missing out on a significant transfer fee, Rangers will be better off in the long run having removed his wages from the books and have replaced him well with the signing of Nedim Bajrami [Stevie Clifford], who the club will hope can have a bigger impact in Scotland than the hit-or-miss departee.

A move to Blackburn marks a resounding end to a saga that all parties will be happy has been concluded. Rangers can now focus on results on the pitch and Cantwell returns to the Championship where he had the best spell of his career so far with Norwich City.
