Rangers supporters would have welcomed the news that defensive reinforcement is on the way at Ibrox.
FC Twente captain Robin Propper arrived in Manchester for a medical on Wednesday (Anthony Joseph, 31 August) ahead of his move to Glasgow.
It saw Philippe Clement moving quick to bring in some much-needed defensive experience after Connor Goldson departed the club to join to join Cypriot side Aris Limassol for a fee in the region of £1.4million plus add-ons (Derek Clark, 30 July).
Reinforcements were needed across the board this summer but centre-back was definitely one area that needed looking at.
But while Propper’s arrival will be heralded by most supporters, you can’t shake the feeling that it might not be the best move for one Gers defender.
Leon King to face Rangers axe
Leon King broke into the first team as a teenager and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the 2022/23 season at Ibrox.
His progress has stagnated a little, though, and the now 20-year-old was restricted to only five Scottish Premiership appearances last term, with only two of those from the start.
With Goldson on the way out and uncertainty over the likes of Ben Davies, King might have sense that this campaign could be one to really lay down a marker.
It seems like the opportunities might remain scarce, though, and you can’t help but feel that King might perhaps be better served seeking a new opportunity.
Whether that is a loan move elsewhere to get some real first-team minutes in him and return to Rangers a more accomplished first-team player or a permanent transfer is a matter for debate.
But with the news that Propper is on his way to Govan, you can’t help but think King is set for the axe from Clement and now is the time for him to seek a different opportunity.
