Keith Hackett believes that Brentford did not deserve to go down to 10 men against Everton for Christian Norgaard’s “reckless” tackle on Jordan Pickford.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief, ex-FIFA, and Premier League referee made it clear he felt the incident was worthy of a yellow card, but nothing more.
The 30-year-olds red card changed the game drastically as Thomas Frank’s team had to alter their tactics to suit the circumstances they were dealing with.
Brentford played the entire second half with 10 men at Goodison Park, but the Bees were able to hang onto a clean sheet despite Everton’s pressure.
The game finished as a goalless draw, but Hackett is adamant that Brentford should have had Norgaard on the pitch to help their pursuit of three points.
Brentford were harshly treated with Christian Norgaard’s red card
Hackett told Football Insider, “This one was wrong.
“The challenge was reckless, but it didn’t have excessive force or malice, and therefore I’d have expected a yellow card and not a red.
“I don’t know what pain the goalkeeper is in, but the reaction of players in these situations don’t help.
“I’d have liked the referee to have seen this again, but it wasn’t a red card.
“Reckless, yellow card, not red.”
