Darren Bent believes Sean Dyche needs to change something before Everton are inevitably relegated from the Premier League.
The Toffees have opened their 2024/25 campaign with consecutive defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham, finding themselves at the foot of the table with a minus-seven goal difference.
While it is extremely early in the new Premier League season, Dyche’s side have been threatened with the risk of relegation for the last three seasons, and it could be the same if things do not change at Goodison Park.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (26 August, 5:44pm), Bent said: “[Jarrad] Branthwaite is going to be a miss; [Ashley] Young was there for the first game of the season, but they just look so disjointed and easy to play against.
“Fifteenth last season, 17th the year before, 16th the year before that. If you don’t improve, the relegation battle is going to get you. We all look at Everton and think that Sean Dyche will find a way to get it done, but it can’t continue.
“I know they’ve played Brighton and Spurs, two tough games, but you’d expect to see more. You’ve seen nothing.”
Sean Dyche to blame for Everton struggles?
Dyche has done a tremendous job at Goodison Park since being appointed in 2023. While the Toffees have been floating dangerously above the dropzone in recent seasons, the manager is hardly to blame.
His defence was actually one of the best in the Premier League last season, with only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool conceding fewer goals, but his attacking lineup let him down entirely.
While the Toffees did end up finishing 14 points above the relegation zone, even with a total of eight points deducted, only Sheffield United scored fewer goals. There lies the main issue.
Even with Jesper Lindstrom and Iliman Ndiaye added to the squad this summer, the striker position is still a major concern, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin unable to hit the back of the net, and being supported by the ineffective Beto and Neal Maupay.
This is where the lack of investment comes into play, which suggests the blame should fall on owner Farhad Moshiri, rather than Dyche who has been left to his own devices.
It is a worrying time for the fans on Merseyside, especially with uncertainty over John Textor’s takeover at Goodison Park, but there is no doubt that Dyche is the man to lead Everton forward.
In other Everton news, Paul Merson was blown away by some “unbelievable” transfer news he was told on Sky Sports.
