Chris Sutton has condemned the Everton fans’ reactions after Neal Maupay was abused following the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday (24 August).
The French forward, who is now being linked with a last-gasp move to Marseille this summer [FootMercato], has divided opinion amongst Premier League fans due to his antics on and off the pitch.
He was also the subject of some abuse from Toffees fans waiting at Euston Station following the thumping at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has received backlash in the media.
Speaking via the It’s All Kicking Off podcast on Monday (26 August), Sutton said: “Why should anybody have to put up with that? Are you telling me the Everton players went to Tottenham and chucked the game? They didn’t.
“Tottenham can do that to teams. It’s been really difficult for the players. You look at the lack of business Everton have done over the summer. Sometimes you need players to come into the club and try to lift the current squad, but that hasn’t happened.
“It wasn’t every Everton fan, just one or two screaming abuse. I get Maupay’s reaction.”
Neal Maupay defended from Everton fan outburst after Tottenham defeat
While taking criticism is part and parcel of the sport, being written in bold in the job description, there is little defending what the fans at Euston Station did to the 28-year-old.
The striker has experienced a tough time on Merseyside since arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022, but whether he leaves or remains at Goodison Park this summer, he is unlikely to immediately change the Toffees’ fortunes.
Sean Dyche’s side have began the new campaign horrendously, first losing 3-0 to Brighton after a positive first-half showing, before being thumped 4-0 by Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side.
If the Toffees want to avoid being anywhere near another relegation battle, they must pluck up their ideas very soon, otherwise it could be a fourth-consecutive season near the dropzone.
Although Dyche’s side did manage to rise 14 points above the bottom three by the time the 2023/24 season ended, dropping down to the Championship was a very real threat at one point.
With a third points deduction possibly on its way to Goodison Park, as per Matt Hughes, it could be another very long season for the Merseyside club.
In other Everton news, Paul Merson was blown away by some “unbelievable” transfer news he was told on Sky Sports.
