Ally McCoist was delighted with Connor Barron’s “brilliant” piece of play to set up Hamza Igamane’s goal in Rangers win against FCSB on Thursday (24 October).
Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports from Ibrox (9:32pm), McCoist credited Barron’s relentless pressing as he won possession back to send Igamane through on goal in the 4-0 win.
Barron and Nico Raskin were picked out for praise by the Ibrox legend for their performances throughout the match, which saw Philippe Clement’s side return to winning ways in emphatic fashion.
McCoist said: “Listen, it all comes from Barron – brilliant. Watch the wee man here again, all over the lad Alhassan, in he goes, wins the ball.
“Take nothing away at all from the goalscorer, but again – we’ve said it all evening – Raskin and Connor Barron.
“They’ve been excellent in their attitude to close people down, not give them any time at all, and that’s where the goal comes from. Well played.”
Connor Barron is undroppable for Rangers
Of all the signings made by Clement across a summer of change at Ibrox, few would have expected the free transfer from Aberdeen to have been an almost ever-present in the Belgian’s midfield.
The 22-year-old’s partnership with Raskin at the base of Clement’s double-pivot hit new heights against FCSB, turning possession over time and time again and keeping the Light Blues on the front foot.
Barron in particular got his just reward with an assist for Igamane’s maiden Gers goal, and having now started 13 of the first 15 games this season, it’s clear where his place in the team lies.
Clement’s failure to bring in an out-and-out number six has been highlighted as one area in which the summer fell short, but in Barron and Raskin, he has a midfield duo packed with energy and dynamism.
Scotland’s senior side have now twice come calling for Barron without him getting onto the pitch, but that first cap surely can’t be far away after performances like this one.
In other Rangers news, a Light Blues legend has given his verdict on Philippe Clement’s long-term future in the dugout at Ibrox.
