Calvert-Lewin stance emerges on new Everton contract amid Newcastle transfer talks

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not inclined to sign a new contract at Everton amid interest from Newcastle United, according to The Times.

Writing on their website (22 June), the news outlet report that the former England international has little incentive to put pen to paper on a new deal amid uncertainty around the club’s ownership situation.

Newcastle have been in talks about a deal for the 27-year-old to replace Callum Wilson, who is expected to leave St James’ Park during the summer transfer window.

The team clearly don’t want to lose Calvert-Lewin since they offered him a new deal [Liverpool Echo, 31 May], but it may be out of their hands at this point.

After years of suffering with injury problems the striker seemed to get over it last season under Sean Dyche, making 38 appearances in all competitions and finishing with eight goals.

But if Newcastle do come calling and firm up their interest with an actual offer it will be really difficult for the club to say no to the cash considering his contract status, and that means they need to plan for life without him.

Beto was signed last summer in a £30million deal but didn’t make the impact many would have hoped, while Youssef Chermiti is young and untested. That won’t be enough to rely upon over the course of a season.

If Calvert-Lewin leaves the club then a new striker will become a priority for the transfer window and Dyche must be backed to ensure he isn’t left short.
