Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji was slammed for a “careless” piece of defending by Matthew Upson during the first half of their 1-1 draw against Everton at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

Speaking live on Amazon Prime coverage of the Boxing Day lunchtime kick-off in the Premier League [26 December, 12:40], former England defender Upson criticised Akanji as Dominic Calvert-Lewin ran across him to attempt to carve out a chance from an Everton cross.

Calvert-Lewin was again selected by Sean Dyche to start against the champions, with Seamus Coleman also selected for only his second start of the season with Ashley Young suspended.

Upson said: “Little bit careless from Akanji there as well. I feel like he didn’t handle that cross there with any real authority, he allowed Calvert-Lewin to run across him.

“Yes, he did get the ball, but a slightly different ball in and he’d be in trouble.”

Everton fought back to draw the game 1-1 as Iliman Ndiaye cancelled out Bernardo Silva’s opener.

Everton looking to navigate tricky festive period

Everton have garnered praise for the way the side have dealt with arguably the toughest run of festive fixtures across the Premier League.

Having carved out goalless draws with Arsenal [14 December] and Chelsea [22 December] – both of whom challenging Liverpool for the title – after the Boxing Day trip to the Etihad, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth come next.

Both opponents have enjoyed excellent respective league campaigns and Dyche will know the full extent of the challenge his side are in for.

But the Toffees, for once, are buoyant following the takeover announcement from the Friedkin Group and a potentially savvy January of recruitment.

Everton should have enough to remain stable for survival under Dyche, the key aim heading across to Bramley-Moore Dock when expectations can begin to rise.
