Rangers risk repeating the mistakes they made with Giovanni van Bronckhorst if they sack Philippe Clement, according to Barry Ferguson.
Speaking on the GoRadio Football Show (1 November), Ferguson said that if the Ibrox hierarchy decides to part ways with Clement, they’ll be back exactly where they were when Van Bronckhorst got the boot.
Both Van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale were sacked at similar points of the last two seasons, but Ferguson argued that Clement’s new-look squad cannot simply be torn up and rebuilt once again.
He said: “I thought it was harsh – I did say at the time. I think Gio is a good manager, there is no doubt; he’s gone over to Besiktas and is doing pretty decent.
“But listen, you can’t just keep changing managers.
“A manager might come in and think ‘I don’t fancy 10, 12 or 14 of these players’ – then what do you do? Do you have to go and do another full rebuild?”
Philippe Clement must make good on his backing at Rangers
Clement will know better than most that even though his side seem to be fairly rudderless on the field at the moment, it’s nothing compared to the off-field shambles which has engulfed the Ibrox boardroom.
Despite ailing form leaving the Belgian’s side nine points behind both Celtic and challengers Aberdeen at the Premiership summit, fans have also expressed their sympathy for Clement given the mess above him.
Supporters currently have no confidence in the board to make the right appointment if Clement is to lose his job, and that lack of faith could prove to be what gives the 50-year-old time to turn things around.
With the club also losing money hand-over-fist, and having committed further transfer fees to sign players Clement specifically wants [Daily Record, 4 June], their so-called project will surely be given time to truly blossom.
It’s clear that while results and performances need to improve on the pitch, Clement’s progress at Ibrox has been continually hampered – and that malaise will only re-set if the Belgian is given the boot.
In other Rangers news, Jim White believes things could be about to “explode” at Ibrox after the latest developments.
